WORKSHOP

Attention, music-lovers, collectors and nerds! Time to become interpreters of your favourite music. Turntables and vinyl are our musical instruments of choice, and with them we experiment and explore the versatile possibilities of the needle as a pickup. We’ll learn what it means to spin records, to synchronize, what a cue point is, how to recognize and deal with the micro-discrepancies between tracks. We’ll also practice with digital DJ consoles.

No matter what style of music you're into – techno, house, hip-hop, ambient, funk, jazz, D'n'B, etc. – after this week you'll know how to organize your music collection professionally and seamlessly play and mix your favourite songs just the way you want. We’ll be talking about context, the dramaturgy of a DJ set and how a mixtape can tell a story.

BIO

Mariya Aleynikova has been behind the turntables for many years under her DJ name Masha Dabelka and founded a DJ school for women called “Turntablista”. She was trained in classical music in Novosibirsk, Siberia, but soon became more fascinated with electronic club culture. In 2007 she came to Vienna through the “Female Pressure” women’s network initiated by Electric Indigo. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, also working in the academy’s sound laboratory, and has since been operating at the interface between art and pop, between high culture and underground.
